What is a J193?
Deceased estate — notice to creditors
When someone dies and leaves an estate, an executor (often an attorney or a family member) takes over their affairs. The law requires the executor to publish a J193 notice in the gazette to tell anyone who is owed money by the deceased that they have 30 days to come forward and prove their claim. If you don't claim in time, your claim may be ignored.
Each J193 names the person who died, their ID number, the date of death, and where to send your claim. It is the official record that the estate is being wound up.
Statute: Section 29 of the Administration of Estates Act 66 of 1965.
